Dear friends,

  • A dramatic week awaits those interested in religion and state with today’s publication of the recommendations of the Nissim Committee. This committee, chaired by former Justice Minister Moshe Nissim, was appointed by PM Benjamin Netanyahu and charged with drafting a compromise proposal after a bill giving the ultra-Orthodox a monopoly over conversion had met with fierce opposition.  We will have a summary of the report in English in the coming days.
  • Five bills relating to religion and state are on the agenda of the Ministerial Committee for Legislation (further details below). The Constitution, Law and Justice Committee will discuss the government bill awarding international authority to the rabbinical courts in matters of divorce, and the Special Committee for the Transparency and Accessibility of Government Information will discuss transparency in the Ministry of Immigrant Absorption.
